A five month long battle against Islam State supporters in Marawi, in the Southern Part of Philippines has ended. In an otherwise Catholic-dominant country, Marawi is a major Islamic city.
On may 23, hundreds of local and foreign gunmen took over parts of the city using civilians as human shields.
The military campaign backed by US claimed the lives of atleast 920 militants, 165 soldiers and 47 civilians.
“The Philippine security forces, aided by the government and the massive support of the Filipino people, have nipped the budding infrastructure and defeated terrorism in the Philippines,.
“In crushing thus far the most serious attempt to export violent extremism and radicalism in the Philippines and in the region, we have contributed to preventing its spread in Asia and give our share to maintaining global peace, stability, and security,” says Philippine Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Monday.
