The mobile internet browser, UC Browser is under scanner by the Indian Government for sending data of Indian users to its server out of the country. Earlier in 2014, Xiaomi had also faced similar allegations over its Redmi phones invading user privacy and sending private information back to its server in China.
Alibaba based UC Browser has 50% market share in India and is way ahead of Google Chrome which lags at 33%. ICTFlash identifies this lab in Hyderabad as Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), an R&D organisation for the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. It has also added that if the Alibaba-owned browser is found guilty, it could be banned, though it isn’t clear at this stage if a ban is indeed on the table.
UC Browser has retaliated by saying that the data from users is used to condition the articles according to the local taste.
